Many soldiers living in Heart Village got married at the hospital, officiated by their supervisors. Their colleagues would not only attend the weddings but also assist the couples in the preparation, cooking and arranging the banquet. At that time, due to meager salaries and restrictions of the Act of Marriage for Military Personnel, unmarried soldiers faced significant challenges in getting married. Most of them met their future spouses through families and friends. Sometimes, they even had to borrow money from their colleagues to cover the costs of holding weddings.
Zhongshan Hall carries the villagers’ joyful memories, serving as a means to alleviate the hardships of life and the sorrow of leaving their hometown. Apart from the weddings, events to reward the soldiers’ services would be held at the hall, including weekly movie screening, Peking opera and other recreational activities.
