The Hospital Right Beside The Village

As one of the few military dependents’ villages primarily consisting of medical related personnel, Heart Village had a tight-knit relationship with the nearby hospital. Children often ran to the hospital to play, and the hospital helped the villagers collect mail and forward phone calls. Even the villagers’ weddings and banquets were frequently held at its Zhongshan Hall. As most villagers were health professionals, Heart Village fostered a unique living experience. When children caught a cold, a simple knock on the neighbor's door sufficed to provide the necessary medicines. As for more severe health issues, the hospital, merely a few steps away, ensured immediate access to medical treatment. A Place for Cure and Rehabilitation The hospital next to Heart Village was originally the Beitou Branch of Taipei Army Garrison Hospital. After World War II, it was renamed as the Beitou Branch of Taiwan Army Hospital (later known as the Army 801st General Hospital and the Tri-Service General Hospital). After World War II, there was a growing awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). During the August 23rd Artillery Battle, some injured soldiers, including those who required long-term treatment for war-related mental illnesses, were sent to the Beitou Branch. This prompted the Beitou Branch to focus on “post-war rehabilitation” and develop its psychiatry department.
