After World War II, a large population migrated from Mainland China to Taiwan, leading to the situation where many military personnel could not secure a place in military dependents’ villages. They had no choice but to build simple and crude dwellings by themselves, resulting in many unauthorized constructions. It was estimated that there were over 1000 such villages across the country.
At that time, military personnel were restricted by the marriage ban and their income was meager, so it was challenging for them to start families. Additionally, they believed that they might return to Mainland China anytime and did not plan to settle in Taiwan permanently. Therefore, with no the intention of staying for a long time, they did not put too much effort on taking care of the living spaces.
