The Sounds and Stories of Heart Village

From the end of World War II until 2016, Heart Village gradually welcomed a group of soldiers and their families. They came from different places with diverse beliefs and backgrounds. Most of them worked at the nearby military hospital. Upholding the spirit of “neighborhood watch,” they found their light while striving to make a living. Heart Village holds a unique role in Taiwan’s history, distinguished by its public hot spring bathhouse and predominantly occupied by medical related personnel. The village was always filled with sounds: the chattering of villagers, the clattering of pots and pans, the whirring of sewing machines, the shuffling of mahjong tiles, and the babbling of hot spring water. After the second generation was born, their playful laughter also became part of the soundscape. These sounds narrated the tales of the residents’ immigration journeys and their resilience to overcome life's adversities.
