The first generation of residents in military dependents’ villages all carried the impacts left by wars. From the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937 until the end of WWII in 1945, Mainland China had been one of the main battlefields of the World War. After WWII, Civil War broke out between Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party. The government of the Republic of China faced a series of defeats and eventually retreated to Taiwan with a large number of military personnel and civilians.
The journey to Taiwan was rough. They trudged across various provinces of Mainland China, before going on ships that were crowded and chaotic to go to Taiwan. After finally arriving in Taiwan, they still had to relocate multiple times. Many residents of Heart Village experienced these troubles before coming to Beitou. Some may be reassigned to other locations again later on.
