Key Events

The Female Youth Corps Originally recruited in Mainland China by General Sun, Li-Jen, the Female Youth Corps sent about 400 young women to receive military training in Taiwan. They first underwent rigorous training in Aholiao (Akauw), Pingtung. After six months, they were divided into specialized groups such as the Medical Corps, Education Corps, and Recreation Corps, etc.. The Medical Corps had to take nursing-related courses and practiced in hospitals. Some of the residents in Heart Village were members of the Female Youth Corps. National Women's League and Heart Village National Women's League of the R.O.C. was founded by former First Lady Soong Mei-Ling (Madam Chiang Kai-shek) with the aim of uniting women across the nation and taking care of military dependents. They ensured that soldiers on the front lines did not have to worry about their family. Heart Village also received assistance from the National Women's League. Seven houses in the village were built by the league and Soong Mei-Ling (Madam Chiang Kai-shek) visited the Beitou Branch of Army 1st General Hospital on several occasions to comfort patients and soldiers. Beitou as a Place to Treat Wounded Soldiers During the August 23rd Artillery Battle, the Beitou Branch of Army 1st General Hospital received a large number of wounded soldiers. The war trauma suffered by the soldiers also led the hospital to focus on the development of psychological healthcare.
