Nights

Thomas Ruff

1992 – 1996 Chromogenic prints Photographed with a 35mm camera mounted on a night-vision sight Images of war at night as were broadcast by various TV stations during Gulf War I (1990–1991) kindled Ruff's interest in night-vision equipment. Originally developed for military purposes, if you look through the device owing to the residual light amplifier occurrences at night appear in a greenish light. Fascinated by the technology and the opportunity to make things otherwise invisible to the naked eye visible, Ruff obtained a residual night-vision sight for his 35mm camera and initially started by taking shots of inner courtyards and streets in and around Düsseldorf at night. He later expanded the locations to include other cities and places.
