Entering Politics: From “Smiling Siew” to National Statesman

"Although I am not particularly good at expressing myself or at handling media relations, my career has kept me constantly engaged in communications and coordination. Communication and coordination prioritize telling others what you have in mind. I believe that as long as you remain modest and tactful and don’t seek personal credit, there will always be people willing to work with you to help solve problems." This casual remark encapsulates the essence of Vincent Siew’s approach to life. While Director-General of the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Minister of Economic Affairs, Chairperson of the Economic Development Commission, Mainland Affairs Council Minister, Political Deputy Minister, Premier, and Vice President, his humble and accommodating manner invariably allowed the needs, desires and views of all parties to be heard and discussed during the decision-making process. He also assiduously explained his ideas, difficulties, and expectations to those in opposition to earn their understanding and agreement. His leadership paved the way for Taiwan’s successful transition and reemergence within the international community. These stories, reflecting his experiences and showcasing his time-honed personality, habits, and skills, unfold and read like the chapters of his life.
