The Eyes of the Sky

"The Eyes of the Sky" is a novel by Syaman Rapongan, a writer from the Yami(Tao) tribe. He is also the builder of the boat on display. Excerpt of the Great Fish Struggle from "Eyes of the Sky" (pages 22-23) "The moon cast its silvery glow upon the vast, rippling ocean, illuminating countless dancing specks of light. The recent aquatic battle had subsided, returning the sea to its usual serene state. It was past midnight, and the tide was beginning to ebb, propelling me forward with the irresistible force of hunger. I surged to the surface, catching the fisherman unaware as he drifted, lost in the moonlit expanse. In a swift motion, I seized the flying fish by the head and dove deep, intending to swallow my prize whole. But just as I was about to engulf the bait, I felt a sharp tug. I was hooked. It was clear that this Dawu man was an experienced fisherman; he knew exactly when to set the hook. Undeterred, I thrashed violently, determined to break free. I am the most agile and valiant fish in these waters, and I would not be defeated by a mere human! I felt the man’s strength pulling against me, but this was my domain. With a powerful surge, I dived deep and wrapped the line around a jagged reef, hoping the sharp coral would sever it. But the line held firm, tearing through the delicate coral, and I was forced to pause, my strength waning. I resumed my struggle, rubbing the line against the coral, but the hook remained embedded in my jaw. If I couldn’t break free, I would be trapped on this reef, my energy depleted, and become easy prey for the lurking moray eels.
