Daily Gradient

TuXing Studio

“When you use the objects, you get a sense of connection and satisfaction.” Tu Xing Studio has created a new space in the central-western district of Tainan, presenting a three-story building that explores the multiple values of pottery, life, and art. The first floor focuses on displaying and selling everyday pottery items, attracting tourists and newcomers to pottery; the second floor is a workshop classroom where students can experience the creative process firsthand; the third floor, named "Stress-Free Space," breaks traditional gallery boundaries, exploring the possibilities of cross-disciplinary art creation. Founder Peng Yi-Hsuan stated that this "gradual understanding" design, from shopping to creation and art appreciation, progresses layer by layer, opening up more possibilities for contemporary craft. Huang Hung-Yu, on the other hand, interprets inner emotions through flower vases in the " Daily Gradient" series. She started this project at 30, selecting local soil from Tainan’s Liujia and Japanese porcelain clay to mix gradation colors. By using her fingers to press and knead the material, she preserved the natural textures before firing. These works not only showcase the diversity of materials but also convey the trajectory of her own inner transformation. Tu Xing Studio was established in 2014, co-managed by ceramic artist Huang Hung-Yu and visual artist Peng Yi-Hsuan, dedicated to exploring the deep connection between ceramics and the land. With a shared love for the land of Taiwan, they collect soil from various regions and transform the different types of soil into ceramic artworks, initiating the "Soil Plan." This project focuses on gathering soil samples from different areas in Taiwan, subjecting them to firing and experimentation to uncover the distinctive properties and possibilities of each type of soil. Carefully selected and tested, these soil samples are ultimately transformed into ceramic works of artistic value, reflecting the vitality of the land and the cultural essence of their origins. Beyond creating art, Tu Xing Studio actively hosts ceramic courses and workshops, offering more people the opportunity to engage with ceramics and experience the creative process. Through these activities, the studio not only promotes ceramic craftsmanship but also fosters collaboration and exchange among artists, bringing a fresh perspective to Taiwan’s ceramic art landscape.
