Early mining activities cleared much of the vegetation. Combined with copper smelter smoke and acidification caused by mineral weathering, the environment of the mining area slowed the pace of plant succession. Even today, early successional species such as silvergrass, Old World forked fern, and batwing fern are still common. Yet over time, the landscape has been gradually transforming, shifting from open grassland into a richer and more diverse vegetation cover.
