In the process of saving her companion robot Bayes, the protagonist Lila encounters obstacles from other robots who were actually sent by a big corporation to prevent Bayes from being taken away and to retrieve him. This raises the question of what secret Bayes is hiding that would warrant such extreme measures. If robots were capable of thinking with a soul-like consciousness like humans, or if human consciousness could be copied onto a robot's body, which form would truly be considered "alive" for us to ponder the question of "what is a human.
